Don't feed your dog this:

Over the years I've compiled a pretty substantial list of no-no foods for the canine crowd and thought I'd share it with you. Get ready, it's long and sometimes surprising (who knew that pennies were dangerous?):

Foods/common objects than can be fatal to dogs

Avocados are toxic
Nutmeg can be fatal
Onions can be fatal
Green tomatoes can be fatal (but ripe tomatoes are less likely to be problematic)
Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure
Fruit pits are toxic, e.g. apple seeds; cherry, peach, pear, plums and apricot pits
Walnuts, especially the seed hulls; dogs can take several days to exhibit serious signs of illness
Wild mushrooms can be fatal
Dark chocolate can be fatal-- the darker the chocolate, the more dangerous for your dog
Cooked bones splinter and can kill dogs by puncturing the abdomen/intestines
Pennies that contain zinc can be fatal (any pennies minted after 1980
Cigarettes and cigarette butts

Foods harmful  to dogs

Garlic
Caffeine
Xylitol sweetener
Macadamia nuts  but symptoms are usually temporary
Too much salt
Too much fat (can cause pancreatitis with only one exposure)
Ham and Bacon - contain both salt AND fat
Abundance of liver  (once a week max)
Raw egg whites alone
Large amounts of grains but rice is generally safe in small amounts.
Dairy products, but a small amount of non-fat, plain yogurt is OK
Potato peels and green potatoes are dangerous.

Of course there are others...like antifreeze which kills thousands of dogs each year. More about that later.

Keep your little friends safe, OK?
Be careful out there...
